James Hardie’s mixed media drawings combine delicate light lines that skim the surface of the paper with heavier, denser, inky brushstrokes. He makes these marks with apparent ease and confidence while always producing a beautifully balanced and refined result.
Whether working in ink, oil pastel or felt tip pen, on thick card or acetate, his style always comes through, adapting new materials effectively to convey his lively forms.
Without working from visual prompts, James applies his own personal and unique mark making to whatever tools and materials he handles, consistently producing works of beauty.
The above text was written about James Hardie by Mattie Roberts during her time volunteering with us in 2017/18. Thanks Mattie!
