From April until June 2010 Project Ability artists Susan Bryson and Karen Kiehlmann led a series of 10 art and crafts workshops for adults from Key Housing Association across East Dunbartonshire.
The workshops were inspired by the Arts & Crafts “Spring Awakening” exhibition at the Auld Kirk museum and delivered in the Barony Chambers. The group were particularly interested in, and inspired by the stained glass work, ceramics and print work.
The workshops began with collograph print using wallpaper and other textured materials to produce interesting marks and patterns on textured paper. They then progressed on to using cutting tools and lino to make prints of the Barony Chambers’ clock tower, a snake and abstract pattern prints.
The group then designed and made “imitation stained glass” pieces using coloured self adhesive vinyl cut and applied to acetate sheets – some incorporating sequins, glitter and cut textiles. The finished artwork included images of the “Kirky Puffer”, flowers, a bird and the Barony Chambers’ clock tower.
The final workshops were held at Project Ability in the ceramics studio- where the group learned how to make hand built and coil pieces, and decorate them with stamps, tools and lace. They designed, made & glazed some lovely pottery bowls, tiles and coasters.
The artworks produced during these workshops are now on display in the Auld Kirk Museum, from Saturday 8 January to Saturday 5 March.
