Martin McCann

Artist's statement

I have been working at the Trongate Studios since 2001. My preferred method of working is assemblage. I enjoy juxtaposing mechanical elements with the human figure. I try to portray the figures as if they are relics from some distant technological civilisation.

The above piece is called ‘Whoops Apocalypse' – it is an anti - war statement.

The piece (pictured) with the tellytubby head is an example of how I pull together various elements to elevate a piece of popular culture to high art.   The wings mythologize the figure so that it takes on the air of a mythological relic… Hence the name ‘Future Relics' for my exhibition.

'Future Relics' runs in Gallery 2 from 28 July – 1 September 2006.

(Open 10am – 5pm, weekdays.)
