Glasgow-based artist Cameron Morgan FRSA undertook a two-week residency at The Art House in June 2017.

While Morgan has worked predominantly in painting, ceramic modelling and slip-casting in recent years, for this residency he chose to focus on the process of screen-printing. With the support of Leeds-based printmaker Richard Marsden and Project Ability support artists Jim Ewen and Jason Davis, Morgan developed an in-depth knowledge of the principles of printmaking and began to experiment with paper and tape stencils as well as exposed screens.

In Windy Miller, Morgan removed the stencil resist to create a light grey ‘ghost’ of his subject. He then drew selected elements of the windmill back into the image and used swift strokes of watercolour to evoke a sense of the energy created by his subject’s rotating blades.

Morgan made The Three Stooges in response to an installation of 80 identical sculptures by British-Trinidadian artist Zak Ové that he saw during his visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Titled with Morgan’s characteristic playfulness, he used bold, highly saturated colours and strong outlines to capture the totemic power of each figure and their confrontational presence as a group.

Through the process of experimentation, Morgan’s works became increasingly abstract: in Untitled I, for example, we can see overprinted details from Combine, The Yorkshire Dales and The Three Stooges, the image teetering between figuration and abstraction. Morgan worked collaboratively with Jim Ewen on a number of pieces, including Sunset over Mayer Sound and Untitled II-III. The artists created these images with watercolour, graphite and ink. The images were then overprinted to create texture and the subtle illusion of landscape.

First Edition is the culmination of the first of four ‘residency’ projects Morgan will be working on over the next year. Each with a different artist, in a different studio and with a different focus. Click here to see the work produced by the artist in our online book.
