Solo Showcase – Jonathan McKinstry

Solo Showcase - Jonathan McKinstry

Project Ability is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Aspire painter Jonathan McKinstry.

Jonathan creates his paintings with flatly applied colour, often in thick oil-slick strokes with a sketchiness and air of caricature. These paintings, made with haste but certainly not unconsidered, are a remarkable balancing act of picture-making and gesture.

Jonathan has created a series of paintings of places visited; real, imagined and yet to visit. These rapid travelogues take us to Edinburgh Zoo, to the inspiring landscapes of Ireland, to the familiarity of the Clyde Auditorium, to the fictional bar of the Star Wars universe located in the pirate city of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine. His representation subverts itself on the side of the surreal; the Clyde Auditorium looks like a reptilian figure emerging from a radioactive lake, only to be engulfed once again in the Sargasso-like Sea of a swirling sky.

Jonathan’s work is pleasurable with a dark edge; it’s lush but laid bare, it contains the pictorial rules of associated traditional landscape painting but also breaks them, it is unpolished but also with a stunning delicacy of touch, it is fascinating but also diverting – and that is no mean feat.
