    Art Expo 2007

Scotland's first ever National Conference for

    Artists with Learning Disabilities.

On the 27th February Project Ability hosted Art Expo - Scotland's first ever National Conference for artists with learning disabilities.   Two hundred people battled through the terrible weather (from as far afield as Sweden, Ireland, Skye, and Shetland) to the Arches in Glasgow for the inclusive, one-day event.

Paula Sage, (pictured with Project Ability artists) star of the film Afterlife and BBC Scotland's River City welcomed the delegates to the conference. Paula, who has Downs Syndrome said,   "I want to help people like me to stand up for what they believe and to help people with a learning disability realise they have skills they can use."

The conference, which was jam-packed with interactive presentations, film screenings, and arts activities was organised by Project Ability because learning-disabled artists make a unique contribution to Scotland's rich culture, but often their work goes unrecognised.

The aim of the day was for people to get together to share their skills, knowledge and experience; and to highlight the talent and achievements of the individual artists and groups that are working throughout Scotland. www.artexpo2007.co.uk

    Scottish Artists' Network

The Scottish Artists' Network www.scottishartistsnetwork.co.uk is a new web based directory that was launched by Project Ability at Art Expo 2007.   The website lists Scottish-based learning disabled artists and the visual arts organisations that support them.

The website aims to: raise awareness about emerging and established learning disabled artists and artist groups, encourage communication and interaction, and provide a point of contact for people looking for further information.

If you would like to register to be listed in the new Scottish Artists' Network website

please contact Project Ability or see www.scottishartistsnetwork.co.uk for further information.
