My figurative pictures are the result of an organic process akin to gardening. The portraits of imagined characters grow out of the paint. They are protagonists who participate in a visual story. They represent a particular façade of emotional life - they are vestiges of the psyche, an animated intuition translated out of the minds eye into paint.

| I also work in a more design conscious style which fulfils a personal function of making permanent my “visual rituals” onto the picture plain. They allow me to use a spatial play of objects invested with personal symbolic meaning onto board or canvas. These pictures are deliberately simplistic pieces as much about shape and colour as they are personal vehicles for expressing emotion through objects. |
