Walking Group: Street Level, Project Ability and Print Studio

Project Ability Walking Group Visit Street Level, Project Ability and Print Studio

On the 21st of February the Walking Group decided to stay close to home and visit Street Level, the Project Ability gallery and the Print Studio.

We started at Street Level Photoworks for ‘Sewing Conflict’ by Jenny Matthews. Jenny has been assigned to photograph all over the globe since the 1980’s. Her work deals with issues of dispossession and human rights, with an emphasis on women and girls. As a photojournalist she has a vast collection of work and this new exhibit sees her turning it into textile. In 2020 she began to print onto cotton and sew on top. One section is separately titled ‘Facial De-recognition’ which features women and girls in Afghanistan with images sewn over their faces to protect their identities. We were shown round and given a more than informative talk by Tiu Makkonen and I just can’t do this exhibit the justice she did. It really needs to be seen in person and runs until May 12th.

We next quickly stopped by to see ‘Patches, lines and colourhands’ by Erin Keogh in our own gallery. This solo show runs until 9th March and features a vast number of Erin’s recognisable, large, colourful canvases.

Finally we went to the first floor gallery of the Print Studio and looked at ‘Keyline’, an exhibition by a selection of various artists including John Byrne. This is where we noticed the labels were very high on the walls and the text very small, the work could be seen but it was hard to find out who it was by, the titles and material used. We mentioned this to a staff member who said they would get to rectifying this as soon as possible. There were some interesting pieces including hanging textiles and I do recommend catching the exhibition before it closes on March 23rd.
