Project Ability presents an exhibition of portraits by young artists across Glasgow, Paisley and Kirkintilloch. This work is the culmination of a week’s workshops led by acclaimed portrait artist Tanya Raabe-Webber, which took place in the Project Ability gallery.

Each student was given an easel and canvas to work with. There was plenty of paint and brushes to go around, and the young artists were given skillful guidance by Tanya in creating their portrait.

They began the process with framed sheets of acetate, held up to their subject, tracing around the face and all of the features. This initial process served to encourage the participants to look closely at one another, aiding them in learning the intricacies of making portraiture. The canvases were started after this exercise, and the resulting paintings clearly show the adventure and liveliness of the students themselves.

In addition to the paintings, everyone was given time to try a fairly new artistic medium that Tanya has recently been investigating: iPad drawings. Using portraiture as the starting point, these drawings were done with a stylus pen or finger, and the results show the distinctive effect and relative ease of digital mark making.
The vibrant and varied results of these five days of portrait master classes are on exhibit until March 24.

Opening: 10 March, 10.30-11.30am and 12 March, 1pm-2pm.
