Walking group: Hunterian Museum

On Wednesday the 13th of December the Walking Group went to the Hunterian Museum. The museum is located in the main building of Glasgow University. Many of the objects on show relate to the history of the university, especially Lord Kelvin’s collection. There is a huge variety of exhibits on show, medical and scientific studies of animals and diseases take up a large portion, as do coins from throughout the ages. There is a mummy’s casket, and models of early humans. There is a new display showing historical artifacts from around the world with accompanying text explaining the truth about who gathered them and how, they have called this section Curating Discomfort and I think it was good to see them being honest about things not found in the UK. Upstairs there is a history of medicine section with a large feature on birth with aids from over the years including several types of forceps and an early training doll of a baby to teach nurses and midwives. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am – 5pm.
