Walking Group visit Glasgow International shows
With Glasgow International in full swing there were plenty of exhibitions to choose from for our walking group outing last week. We decided to visit both Modern Institute galleries and also the gallery at South Block.
Korean artist Kim Bohie is the solo artist currently showing in the Modern Institute’s Osborne Street gallery and we all loved the beautiful landscapes and plant life in her paintings. With the sun streaming in through the roof windows some of us felt we’d been transported from Glasgow to a far away exotic location.
On the way to Aird’s Lane we stopped off in South Block to see the wonderous paper cuts of Katherine Anne Rose. It was a good time to sit down for a chat as well and plan our route to the next gallery.
Unfortunately getting to the Aird’s Lane Modern Institute galleries isn’t easy for everyone in the group. Access into the galleries themselves is fine but the cobbled street, uneven pavements and lack of dropped kerbs make it difficult for our wheelchair users to get as far as the door, so they both decided to give it a miss. This is unfortunate as both exhibitions are well worth seeing. First we saw the show of works by Keith Haring, the artist who became famous for his drawings in the New York subway. Although Haring made a great many of these drawings, not so many survive as they were made on panels used as advertising space so were constantly being covered with new posters.
We completed our visit with a viewing of the huge wall painting by Richard Wright in the lower gallery. Some of us found that we could only look at this for a short time as it made our eyes go wobbly but it was also hard to look away as it’s so compelling. As on previous visits, Shae and Mae made us very welcome and gave us an introduction to the Modern Institute exhibitions.
All three exhibitions in the Modern Institute galleries are on until 5 September.
Unfortunately the Katherine Anne Rose exhibition has now ended.
