We were delighted to welcome Kanae Park to Project Ability earlier this year, to deliver a calligraphy workshop to some of the artists in our ReConnect studios. Ten artists took part and Kanae delivered instruction and techniques on how to begin experimenting with the art of calligraphy. For many of the artists it was the first time they had the opportunity to explore this historic and beautiful art form.
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing, where each stroke, curve, and flourish becomes a deliberate act of expression. Rooted in centuries-old traditions across cultures, it invites artists to slow down, focus on movement and rhythm, and engage deeply with the written form. The practice often encourages mindfulness: the steady pace of the pen, the attention to pressure and spacing, and the quiet repetition of marks can create a reflective and calming creative process.
In the recent workshop, delivered by a professional calligraphy artist Kanae Park, artists with lived experience of mental ill health were invited to explore calligraphy as both a creative skill and a gentle, restorative practice. Through guided exercises and demonstrations, participants experimented with pens, inks, and lettering styles. Kanae created a supportive environment and showed us how the meditative qualities of calligraphy could help support wellbeing while expanding their artistic practice.
About Kanae Park,
I’m a Japanese freelance art workshop coordinator and facilitator, specialising in creative workshops inspired by Japanese culture and traditional arts. My sessions often focus on Japanese calligraphy (shodō), origami, and other mindful craft activities that invite people to slow down, be present, and enjoy making something with their hands.
I grew up in Japan where calligraphy is often introduced from a young age, and I’ve always been drawn to the beauty and expressiveness of brush and ink. For me, calligraphy is not only about writing characters but also about rhythm, movement, and mindfulness. Each brushstroke reflects both technique and the state of mind in the moment. Through my workshops, I enjoy sharing this aspect of Japanese culture and helping people experience the calm and focus that these traditional art forms can bring.
My workshops are designed to be welcoming and accessible to everyone, whether they are completely new to calligraphy or simply curious about Japanese culture. Participants often try basic brush techniques, write simple characters, or create small pieces to take home. Alongside calligraphy, I also introduce origami and other simple crafts that encourage creativity and relaxation.
It has been a real pleasure working with the ReConnect artists and participants. I’ve really enjoyed seeing how people interpret the activities in their own way and how these creative moments help bring people together. It’s always rewarding to see participants relax, experiment, and discover something new.
