Project Ability tutor, Celine, has been running workshops with Glasgow Disability Alliance for the last weeks. A group of artists have been working on range of printing techniques on paper and fabric. Last week they were experimenting with tie dye and this week the group tried Cyanotype printing and the results are beautiful!
The night before the workshop, Celine made up the cyanotype chemicals and coated some pieces of cotton fabric and one side of the cotton bags and hung them in a darkened room overnight to dry. She brought in a range of materials to use as objects to block the light and also suggested paper cut outs, drawing on or photocopying onto tracing paper. Miriam, one of the artists in the group, said she would like to print a photograph of her face onto her bag so they took a photograph and had it made into a negative on tracing paper. She then added some lettering and then exposed it.
Another artist, Rosie, made a very elaborate and carefully structured design using leaves, lace and lettering which she printed onto a cotton bag and onto a piece of fabric. The other artists used a combination of leaves, lettering and cut outs to make their designs onto bags and pieces of fabric and one of the group made an interesting piece on fabric using tissue and elastic bands!
The group also did a fun experiment using some of the fabric tied up with elastic bands, in a similar way to tie dye binding, and exposing these in the lightbox.
Next week the group are trying silk screen printing and we can’t wait to see what’s created!
