Lennox Castle Stories

The Lennox Castle Stories project is reaching its conclusion and everyone is busy trying to finish their “story”.  The group have not wavered in their commitment to the project and are looking forward to revealing the website at C-Change’s 10th birthday event at the Marriot Hotel on Saturday 13th October.

We first met Norman Telfer at the project launch in February.  Since then, every Friday morning, Norman has traveled from his home in Sanquhar, in Dumfriesshire to contribute to the project.  On the way he collects his friend John Meldrum who lives in Kirkconnel.

Norman and John were both born in the early 1940’s.  Norman was born in Castle Douglas and John in Cumnock and both lived with their families on farms.  Norman went to Lennox Castle in 1954 and was “there and back, there and back” until it closed in 2002.  John was there a while later,  although he can’t remember when and he thinks he left in 1997.  Both men are supported by Community Lifestyles and are enjoying a quiet retirement.

We asked Norman why he was taking part in the project. “I’ve got the motor so getting here is no bother.  It brings back memories. I was there for a long time.  It was a terrible place.”
