Meet the Volunteers – Caitlin Taylor

Caitlin Taylor

In this week’s Meet the Volunteers, we would like to introduce you to the fantastic Caitlin Taylor, who has been a great addition to our Aspire team.

Are you a graduate or undergraduate artist? Can you tell us what course you are on, or a little about your art practice?
I graduated in June with a BA Hons in Design for Textiles, specialising in print from Heriot Watt. I am an avid screen-printer and currently working on developing my own small company in order to sell my prints. I work in a very practical way, fully embracing the imperfections of screen-printing and I enjoy seeing what mistakes lead to beautiful outcomes.

In what workshop did you volunteer?
I volunteered in the Aspire workshop. I have really enjoyed meeting the members of the class, and it has been lovely getting to know their own personalities and working styles. As everyone is free to create at their own pace and with whatever medium they like, it’s inspiring to see the different art pieces created. The tutors have been fabulous, and have made my volunteering experience an extremely comfortable one. They have also encouraged me to try something new, which has developed a new found love of ceramics for me!

Why did you apply to volunteer at Project Ability?
As much as I love designing and printing, I also feel it’s an extremely important aspect in life to give back. Project Ability is an amazing opportunity for me to encourage and help others who also find joy in pursuing art, whether as a hobby or a career.

Did your experience live up to your expectations?
Yes. I was nervous before starting as my confidence in dealing with non-familiar situations was a little low, but volunteering at Project Ability has helped to develop my own confidence. My own life experiences have unfortunately led to dealing with mental health issues, as I have several family members who are unwell. Therefore, it was out of my comfort zone to be a part of the Aspire classes. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I had been worried about what would be expected of me, but the environment is so comfortable and welcoming. I am extremely grateful I was placed into this workshop as it has allowed me to experience a situation I may never have put myself in.

What have you learned from your experience with us?
I have learned that no matter what your situation in life is, you will always be able to create art. I personally think this is so important as I believe creating art is good for the soul. It has been so interesting to see how different each individual’s style is, and how they interpret their own inspiration into art. I gained valuable experience in how producing ideas and emotions in this way can impact on many conditions positively. Although my own work is not based on perfection, volunteering at Project Ability has taught me to embrace my own style a lot more.
A lot of the materials used in the classes are new to me, such as ceramics. Even traditional painting is out of my comfort zone, so it’s amazing how quickly you do learn different skills.

Do you have a favourite Project Ability artist or art work that has stood out for you?
Michael McMullan. I love the line work in his paintings and drawings. As I have worked closely with him, you can tell how much he loves creating his pieces as well which adds to my own personal preference of his work!

Would you recommend others to volunteer with us?
Absolutely.

Any other comments?
I am always looking forward to the next week of workshops. I am always looking forward to the conversations had, the skills I will need to learn and of course to see the amazing work produced by the class members.

Thank you so much Caitlin!
