Walking Group visit ‘Liquid Land’ at GOMA

Glasgow International Art Festival is upon us and there’s a lot going on with a great many exhibitions to choose from. Our walking group was invited to a preview of ‘Liquid Land’, an exhibition by Australian South Sea Islander artist Jasmine Togo-Brisby in Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art. The show hadn’t yet opened and when we arrived Jasmine and her sister were hard at work in the gallery, finishing off the final piece of work. She took a break to chat to us and tell us about the work and answer questions.

The artwork is created in response to the building it’s held inside and is an exploration of blackbirding, the nineteenth-century practice of deceiving or kidnapping Pacific Islanders for forced labour on Australian sugar plantations. Smells can be highly evocative and on entering the gallery the scent of treacle hangs in the air.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 6 September and you can find further information at Jasmine Togo-Brisby – Liquid Land – Glasgow Life

The walking group is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.
