Walking Group visit Glasgow Print Studio and Streetlevel Photoworks in Trongate 103
With Glasgow International art festival having come to an end for 2024, there are still plenty of the featured exhibitions to be seen, and our walking group went to visit two of them last week. First was ‘Arctic Swell: a simple melody’ by Kotryna Ula Kiliulyte in the galleries at Street Level. The staff made us very welcome and Natalie gave us an introduction to the artworks. With one room bathed in coloured light and the other in darkness, there is much to be seen. The theme of the works is solastalgia – anxiety stemming from the man-made climate crisis – and the still photographs and video pieces are intended to soothe and ease.
Upstairs in the main gallery of Glasgow Print Studios we were also met by friendly faces. This time it was the artist curators Rudy Kanhye and Lauren La Rose that greeted us along with Creative Director Claire Forsyth. Between the three of them they showed us around the works in ‘each body wakes up on a wave’ and encouraged us to interact with many of the pieces. We took rubbings from giant sized coins, played ping pong on a miniature sized table tennis table and touched prints coated in heat sensitive inks which responded to our contact. All this fun while learning some history and considering themes of empire, slavery and migration.
Thanks to Natalie, Donna, Rudy, Lauren and Claire for the warm welcomes and information.
Both exhibitions end soon, with the Street Level one finishing on 27 July and the Glasgow Print Studio one on 4 August. So catch them while you can.
