Elie Coutts & Cameron morgan

16 March – 9 April

Project Ability, Gallery II

A Shetland/Glasgow textile collaboration

Project Ability teamed up with Shetland based arts organisation Gaada to commission a Shetland based artist to collaborate with Project Ability artist Cameron Morgan.

Gaada is an artist-led organisation based in Burra Isle, Shetland. “We believe art is for all and work with communities in Shetland to develop meaningful and critical art activities.”Their work centres around improving access to creative development through Gaada’s well-equipped visual art workshop and specialist support from its experienced artists.

Gaada helped us facilitate the project which paired Glasgow based artist Cameron Morgan with Shetland based artist and designer Elie Coutts. Elie Coutts’ practice includes embroidery and painting, two things Morgan enjoys very much! With this foundation in common, Cameron and Elie met regularly through zoom sessions, getting to know each other and discussing and sharing their work with one another. We are delighted to showcase the finished pieces they created as part of this virtual collaboration.

         About Elie Coutts:

‘This exhibition is an exploration of the two artists’ experiences of Nature in their contrasting localities, Shetland and Falkirk.

Elie’s work is an exploration of how time spent in nature affects the human psyche. She focused on species of plant and animal encountered on a winter’s walk around Lerwick, the ubiquitous herring gulls and weeds, that are often overlooked. Reimagining scenes to convey the connection she felt with her natural environment, particularly during lockdown. ‘
