Today we’re publishing a special blog, showcasing a piece by Andrew Crosbie made in memory of his grandmother. Andrew’s painting is made in watercolour, using his grandmother’s favourite colours. It depicts a butterfly and a sunset to reflect her love of butterflies – she wore them on her clothing and her jewellery, and received butterfly birthday cards from Andrew – and his memories of their time together.
Andrew’s grandmother was born and raised in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, and despite spending most of her life in Glasgow, she still considered Rothesay to be her home. On their last holiday to the island together, Andrew and his grandmother took an evening drive to Port Bannatyne to watch the sunset; it was one of the last times that she was able to walk without a zimmer frame or wheelchair. Andrew chose to paint the sunset as a backdrop to his butterfly portrait as an ode to this special memory – to represent the quiet, reflective time spent watching the sunset with his grandmother.
Thank you Andrew for sharing the meaning behind this beautiful portrait with us.
