On Wednesday the 24th May the walking group visited three exhibitions in the Trongate area; two at The Modern Institute, Aird’s Lane and a large group show at The Briggait. At The Modern Institute we saw Flattening the Penny by Andrew Kerr and The Nature by Yuichi Hirako. This is Kerr’s seventh solo exhibit at this location and showcased new abstract works in a mainly muted pallet. In the smaller space we were treated to work inspired by Tree Man, a Japanese folkloric character called Kodama. The character is a self exploration of nature and features a male figure with anterls, blraches or follaige, it is a combination of paintings ranging from very tiny to huge and wonderful sculptures. After this we moved on to The Briggait to see WEST which is Visual Arts Scotland’s graduate showcase and spring members’ exhibition. It had a huge variety of works, many displayed on the floor, some using sand and found objects, glass, resin and ceramic works alongside yarn and paper. A varied showcase with something each of us liked. We then took a short walk along the Clydeside, before heading back towards town.
