Catch up with Morag Macgilchrist, Project Ability artist and writer for the Walking Group blogs, as she recounts her experience at Art Outside of the Box!
From the 7th to the 14th of June I was at Byers Hub, Glasgow University, helping to run a GI exhibition and series of workshops. The Byers Hub is a community building on the ground floor of the Clarice Pierce building. Myself and Dr Cheryl McGeachan were running in conjunction with the Glasgow Open Museum, a drop in exhibit with the Art Extraordinary handling kit. Project Ability and Leverndale Recreational Therapy were, as curators of the collection, invited along to host activity workshops throughout the week.
On Friday we had several members of the open museums team doing collage and a meet the curator event with a talk from Dr Anthony Lewis on his work with Art Extraordinary.
Saturday was a community event day in the building and we had a lot of families with young children doing collage and drawings.
Monday saw an MP doing a tour in the morning and in the afternoon the first of three visits from Leverndale and their workshop was making fabric birds.
Tuesday saw Celine bring along Project Ability artists Ruth Much and Simon Mcauley, to do rubbings using stencils and crayons.
Wednesday saw a visit from some summer exchange students from Ohio, we discussed the work we had done with the collection and took them to Kelvingrove. There we met Dr Lewis again and the three of us talked through various questions on the permanent display. We then had Professor Chris Philo visit us, back at the hub, to chat with them about how human geography and art extraordinary fit together. That afternoon’s activity was again courtesy of Leverndale who brought in ceramic hearts and stars to decorate.
Thursday saw Kath Kay visit to do some work on Antonia Jabolar with textiles. Celine brought along the walking group in the late afternoon and they were able to finish the pieces they had started a couple of weeks earlier at a workshop.
The last day was Friday which saw a team from open museums back to collect the kit and another visit from Leverndale. This time it was fabric hearts and there was a colin cake to share to celebrate the end of the week.
In all over 120 pieces of art were donated to our ever growing wall space and it was displayed until the end of GI.
