The artwork in this solo exhibition explores of reflection through two distinct and interconnected visual worlds. One series is composed of tightly packed geometric shapes, angular lines and repeated forms. Dense layers of black line and abstract mark-making create a sense of order and structure, while overlapping and intersecting forms introduce movement and energy. The drawings invite us to look closely, discovering smaller shapes and patterns within the complexity of the whole.
The second series turns this same approach towards the natural world, exploring the intricate forms of flowers and plants. Softer, more organic shapes emerge through flowing lines, layered petals and leaves, creating compositions that are both vibrant and densely constructed. Although inspired by nature, these works retain the geometric qualities found in the abstract drawings; shapes are repeated, layered and carefully arranged, transforming flowers and plants into complex patterns of form and line.
Rather than existing as opposites, the geometric and organic works reveal a shared visual language. Across both series, Low uses repetition, layering, pattern and distinctive mark-making to build richly detailed compositions. There is a continual interplay between structure and spontaneity, control and movement, abstraction and observation. The works demonstrate how the same visual elements can be transformed and reinterpreted, whether drawn from the imagination or from the natural world.
Together, the works show how Low finds rhythm and pattern in both abstract forms and the natural world, building complex compositions through repetition and layering.
In the context of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival theme of Reflection, Low’s drawings invite us to consider how the abstract and the organic are more connected than we realise. Through repetition, pattern and the layering of forms, the drawings encourage us to find order, connection and possibility within the complexity of what we see.

About the artist, Stuart Low
Stuart Low is an artist working in Project Ability’s ReConnect studios. His practice spans bold, abstract paintings and more delicate drawings in colour pencil and graphite. His work explores colour, movement and natural forms, with flowers and plants featuring strongly in his observational studies. Drawing is an important part of his daily practice, with his sketchbooks documenting an ongoing fascination with nature and abstraction. Low has also shown his creativity and technical skills through inventive portraiture, which have a distinct style and mark making to them, usually executed in pencil.
