The Firth of Clyde (2017)

Ralph Douglas

Ralph Douglas attends Project Ability’s Aspire programme.

Ralph has been attending the workshops for many years and throughout this time we have seen him paint many portraits and self portraits rendered in an expressionist style, recalling the Romantic paintings of the past. Ralph applies layers of paint in soft swathes to carefullly make his pictures, combining intricate detail with painterly expression.

Ralph’s work is vigorous and playful; demonstrating an ambling and experimental approach towards the use of line in drawing and expression in painting. Over the years he has created many unique self portraits and reproductions of iconic religious paintings in his own signature style.

More recently Ralph has been painting landscapes and still life objects. Still with the same lightness of touch and delicate application of paint and colour. There are no straight lines, no solid blocks of colour; the subjects seem almost ephemeral, as though they are not fixed to the surface.
