In late November, Project Ability’s Director Elisabeth Gibson went to Madrid to visit the supported visual art studio Debajo del Sombrero.
“I have known of the work of the artists at the visual art studio Debajo del Sombrero, Madrid for many years, and it was a great pleasure to meet them in person and spend a few days in the studio.
Located in various venues across Madrid, the first studio I visited was at the extraordinary Matadero Madrid. This enormous Contemporary Art Centre was until the 1980’s the slaughterhouse and livestock market for Madrid. Here, the Sombrero’s have access to a large open studio where artists with learning disabilities, art facilitators, art students and artist volunteers work together three days a week. The artists were extremely kind to me with my non-existent Spanish and generous with their time in showing me their work.

The following day I joined a group of artists at the Academy of Fine Art where they artists have access to the sculpture studio. A big thank you to Project Manager Marisol Sol Alvarez for taking time out of her busy schedule to introduce the artists. Watch this space as we will be showing work by the Sombrero’s in our gallery in the near future!”
