ReConnect Walking Group: Botanics & Bellahouston

Our walkers have been continuing their explorations of Glasgow parks with trips to the Botanic Gardens and Bellahouston.

Botanic Gardens

The walking group had a very pleasant visit, with scorching sunshine, to the botanic gardens. They took the sensible route: a gentle ramble with plenty of stops under shady trees to chat and admire the surroundings. There was plenty to admire with many plants in full bloom, and we all agreed that this is the finest of all the Glasgow parks. The place was buzzing with activity and, due to the heat, much inactivity and relaxation as well.

Did you know that there is a derelict train station hidden below the park? After closing in 1939, it housed some shops and other businesses including a nightclub called Sgt. Pepper’s – but was destroyed by fire in 1970, and has been abandoned ever since.

The walk ended with ice cream from the kiosk (as it should).

Bellahouston Park

Bellahouston is another great Glasgow park with an interesting history and lots to see. Our group met up at the Palace of Art, a grand building that was built as part of the Empire Exhibition of 1938. It was originally used to display works of art but has long since been converted and used as a sports and leisure centre. There are plenty of pieces of art to see in other parts of the park though, and our group had a lovely time visiting some of them before going for a cup of tea outside the House for an Art Lover.
