On Wednesday 23rd August the Walking Group visited the Glasgow Police Museum. The museum is a short walk from Project Ability and is located on Bell Street. Run by the Glasgow Police Heritage Society, the museum is staffed by ex police officers who can take you on a guided tour of the city’s forces history.
We learned Glasgow has the oldest police force in the UK. They have British uniforms from throughout the decades and a large collection of international uniforms and badges boasting every country is represented to some extent. There is a large collection of war medals won by soldiers who were in WW1. There is a display dedicated to Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s father, Superintendent William Mackintosh. He lead the Scottish focus to win many international tug-o-war tournaments with 5 medals awarded to him. They have excellent information boards about the changing structure of the forces and notable crimes solved. The museum is open 7 days a week.
