Walking Group Visit Edinburgh Art Galleries

Walking Group at Project Ability take trip to Edinburgh to see art galleries!

We are often spoilt for choice of things to do in Glasgow, but sometimes it’s good to take a trip to Edinburgh, and that’s what our group did last week. It’s a pleasant journey on a comfortable coach and on a sunny day, which it was, the scenery from the upper deck is superb.

We started off in the Fruitmarket Gallery to see an exhibition by Zimbabwean artist Portia Zvavahera. The large paintings displayed over two floors combine layers of painting and printmaking and explore the artist’s dreamworld; often dark and threatening. If you don’t have time to visit the exhibition you can view a walkthrough on the Fruitmarket website Portia ZvavaheraZvakazarurwa – Fruitmarket

Our next stop was just across the road to the City Arts Centre to see ‘Inked Up: Printmaking in Scotland’, an exhibition of prints by more than thirty artists, made using a wide range of techniques and made over a large period of time. You can find information and see many of the prints at Inked Up: Printmaking in Scotland | Museums and Galleries Edinburgh It’s an interesting and varied exhibition, however we were a bit annoyed that the height of the works and information on the walls made for a very awkward viewing experience for our wheelchair user.

Our final gallery visit for the day was to Stills to see After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024. There was lots to see and talk about in this exhibition as many of the photographs evoked memories and stories for each of us. After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024 – Stills
