Workshops at John Street

Over the last few months, Project Ability tutor Alison has been facilitating workshops on a Friday afternoon at John Street House.

John Street House is a care home service for adults and young people with a range of disabilities. We caught up with Alison to hear more about the workshop block and what they got up to each week.

“It has been such a lovely way to spend a working Friday, there’s always such a positive and friendly atmosphere there. The classes were initiated by Stephen Morrison, an old regular of ours that we haven’t seen for many years. The people at John Street were thinking of new things to do now that restrictions were being lifted; Stephen is proud of being the one to start this run of classes off.

We’ve tried to do something different each time (drawing, portraits, printmaking etc) and although the same regulars turn up each week, it’s been nice to meet quite a few others as well over the weeks. It’s a really lively place, everyone who lives there seems to have a busy and interesting life. The room we use for our class is regularly transformed for a beach party or jubilee party, so it’s always exciting to see what we’re coming into each week!”

As the classes came to an end last week, one of the artists had asked Alison if they were going to get a certificate for completing the block, Alison not prepared with any certificates quickly said they would make some during the last session! All the artists were very chuffed with the work they completed and of course very happy to receive their final certificate! (Pictured below!)

We hope to be back very soon for more workshops!
