On Wednesday 6th December the walking group visited Tramway to see two exhibitions currently on there. We first entered the main gallery to see the first European solo show of Ramesh Mario Nithiyandran ‘Idols of Mud and Water’. This show consisted of fictional idols crafted mainly from ceramics, inspiration taken from the iconography of South Asian worship. A large building constructed from reclaimed and found materials houses a huge collection of mini idols, keeping them secret and safe, almost all are adorned with gold glaze, having large genitalia and fancy jewellry. Taking up most of the other half of the main gallery is a gigantic idol surrounded by and pouring water, it is draped in neon lights and is a spectacle to behold. The exhibit is on until April 21st 2024.
