John Cocozza, a long time aspire artist at Project Ability, recently embarked on an exciting project with SCLD (Scottish Commission for Learning Disability). He was one of nine artists to be commissioned to create a series of illustrations for SCLD’s new website and marketing materials. You can read our latest news post to find out more about the project.
Today we are excited to share with you Cocozza’s final illustrations. They are striking, inspiring and fulfil the brief in terms of colour, branding and visual representation of SCLD’s aims:
- What human rights mean for people with learning disabilities
- Writing reports
- People having meetings and working together
- People with learning disabilities having a voice
Cocozza along with the other artists and two art tutors began to have conversations around the importance of Human Rights. Discussions explored the importance of having rights to education ,work, housing and to be the person you want to be and to have the life you want to lead.
John Cocozza used printmaking techniques to experiment with his initial drawings. His characteristically strong bold lines were perfect for making a statement and urging people to use their voice. The final four illustrations submitted to SCLD were intaglio prints on painted paper.
Thank you to Project Ability tutors Val and Jason who supported the artists during this project.
If you have an idea for a commission for one or more of our artists then we would love to hear from you! Email info@project-ability.co.uk to start the conversation.
Each week we’ll be presenting another artists final illustrations, we hope you’ll follow along! In the meantime you can hear more from SCLD and Project Ability tutor Valerie here.
