Walking Group in Project Ability and Glasgow Print Studio
As the forecast predicted torrential rain, we decided to keep our outing very local this week and made some visits to some of the galleries within Trongate 103. Where better to start than our own gallery to see ‘Sensation’, an exhibition of artworks made by young artists under 30 who attend the Aspire program in Project Ability studios.
We then popped along to the Glasgow Print Studios main gallery to see ‘A Pastiche of Different Techniques’ by David Osbaldeston. Some of the group had questions about the works on show and luckily Claire, the Creative Director was on hand to answer them. From the gallery we went upstairs to visit the archive room which is open to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Kristina, the Archive Curator, was there to greet us and give us an introduction to the collections and talk about some of the printmaking techniques. She showed us some pieces by Elizabeth Blackadder and John Byrne amongst others and told us that the entire archive is available online and visitors can request which pieces they would like to see before visiting. We want to thank Claire and the team at Glasgow Print Studios for taking our access request from back in February into account; we pointed out that the artworks were hung a bit too high last time and they’ve started installing their exhibitions much more accessibly now!
We ended our afternoon with a visit to the Print Studios ground floor gallery to see ‘A Bestiary‘ by Ken Currie which is based on the poetry of Ted Hughes. These are very dark works both in hue and subject matter. Some more colourful works nearby by Thyme James offered a very definite contrast.
By the time we’d finished looking at the artworks, we realised that the weather had escalated and rain was bouncing off the pavements outside. We clearly made the right decision to stay indoors.
