Walking Group in Necropolis

Walking Group visit the Glasgow Necropolis

Our walking group were fortunate to have a dry and sunny day for a visit to Glasgow Necropolis this week, and after several outings that took us only short distances from the studios, this one was more of a stretch.

The necropolis is the final resting place of more than fifty thousand individuals over almost two hundred years. Fewer than a tenth of these lives are marked with headstones or monuments of any kind. Amongst the great and the good to be commemorated, we spotted the headstone of William Miller, author of the well known nursery rhyme ‘Wee Willie Winkie’. We spent a while admiring the magnificent monument dedicated to the memory of the actor John Henry Alexander, with its ornate sculptures representing tragedy and comedy and an epitaph that begins with ‘Fallen is the curtain – the last scene is o’er: The favourite actor treads life’s stage no more…’

The path to the top of the hill is a steep hike and with uneven surfaces in places it was quite a challenge for our wheelchair user. The views from the top made it very worthwhile and the group hopes to return again in the future to explore some more.

The necropolis is currently open between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00 each day.
