Walking group: The Briggait and The Modern Institute

The Briggait and The Modern Institute

On Wednesday 18th October the Walking Group visited 3 local galleries. First, the group went to The Briggait to see the 2023 Highland Art Prize exhibition. Taking in works from organisations across Scotland. this show hosts the entries and shortlisted pieces. The prize giving takes place on the 20th of October so in lieu of a winner we each chose our favourite piece to be photographed next to (see below). This exhibition is on until the 21st of October.

We then headed across the road to The Modern Institute’s Aird’s Lane gallery to see an exhibit by Matt Connors; ‘Finders’. Inspired by Apple’s file manager, Connors uses repeated shapes, patterns and layers of paint to create several different pieces of work. Among these were the very yellow, ‘Beach Knife Fight’, the bright pink, ‘Pink Drift’ and the multicoloured ‘Harlequin Set’ (1 through 4). The show runs until 18th November.

After that, it was a short walk to The Modern Institute’s Osborne Street studio to see Alberta Whittles “Even in the most beautiful place in the world, our breath can falter”. The walls are painted in pinks, lilacs and blues and the paintings are large with themes of sea and death throughout. In the centre of the room is a huge tapestry depicting the nursery rhyme ‘Ring Around the Rosie’ with terrifying masks in bright colours. Paintings depict skeletons surrounded by sunflowers, images of ghost-like figures and teardrop motifs are carried throughout the room. This exhibit will end on the 11th of November.
