Walking Group visit The Modern Institute

A trip closer to home

Our last couple of outings have been a bit further afield than usual, so for this trip we kept things more local and took a wander to the two Modern Institute galleries to see their current exhibitions.

We were welcomed to the Osborne Street gallery by Calum and to Aird’s Lane by Mae. Calum was not long back from working at the Frieze Art Fair in London where amongst the many visitors he saw were Mick Jagger and Madonna. He gave us an introduction to the work in ‘surroundings’ by Haley Tompkins, an exhibition of painted canvases and everyday objects including twigs and clothing. In Aird’s Lane, Mae showed us around ‘Time’s Arrow’ by Jesse Wine and ‘Camping’ by Osama Al Rayyan. The group were particularly taken with the works in ‘Time’s Arrow’ and the contrasting delicacy of the bronze works and heavy solidity of the clay pieces.

We finished up our outing with a visit to Wasps South Block gallery to see ‘Fragments: The Rainforest and The Ghost Wood’, an exhibition of photography by Matt Sillars.

The Modern Institute exhibitions have now concluded but the Matt Sillars one in South Block runs until 8th December – Fragments: The Rainforest and The Ghost Wood – Matt Sillars – Wasps
