Walking Group visit Modern Institute

Walking Group visit Modern Institute galleries

Our first walking group after a short break took us to visit both of the nearby Modern Institute galleries. We started with a visit to the Osborne Street space to see a display of works from the archives of the late Duggie Fields. Paintings and design works by the artist sit next to items from his flat where he lived and worked for fifty years. We were treated to an interesting introduction to the works from Calum, one of the gallery staff, and were very impressed with the accessibility of all the artworks as everything was displayed in a way that made the pieces clearly visible to all of us.

Aird’s Lane was our next stop to see the Jeremy Deller show. Here we were welcomed by Mae who gave us a short introduction to some of the work. A selection of large banners made in collaboration with banner-maker Ed Hall surround a recreation of a café where we enjoyed a sit down with cups of tea and coffee. The tables and chairs were quite a challenge to get into and out of and completely out of the question for our wheeler as it’s on a raised platform.

On our way back to base we popped in to see the exhibition in Mono. This was a show of works by Project Ability artists who made pieces based on record sleeves.

The Duggie Fields exhibition runs until 6 November and Jeremy Deller until 20 December. Visit The Modern Institute for more information.
