Project Ability’s Walking Group visit The Modern Institute
Last week our walkers had a local outing to visit both of the nearby Modern Institute galleries to see the latest exhibitions there. We were not disappointed. In the Osborne Street gallery we were greeted by Mae who gave us an introduction to the flower paintings of Michael Wilkinson in ‘Still Life with Blank Canvas’. The four paintings in the exhibition are representations of flowers placed in front of blank linen canvases in aluminium frames and incorporate the illusion of trompe l’oeil with great success as we were all fooled by the painted trickery.
From here we went across to the Aird’s Lane gallery where we were met by Callum who introduced us to the two exhibitions there. The first of these was ‘Roots and Tourist’ by Kim Fisher, a collection of pieces composed of stretched dyed linen with resin forms mounted on top. The second exhibition is ‘Secret Smile’ by Julia Chiang, a series of paintings made by applying thin layers of paint in a variety of ways, creating colourful and captivating pieces.
As we were so nearby, we also popped across to the galleries at The Briggait to catch ‘Paintings’ by Brian McGeoch and then a very quick visit to see ‘Standing on giants’ shoulders’ by Angel Mitov in the gallery at South Block.
Five exhibitions of paintings in one afternoon was a lot to take in, but with such a wide variety of styles available to see within such a short distance it would be a shame to miss any of them out.
All three Modern Institute exhibitions run until 5th March. Brian McGeoch at The Briggait runs until 10th February and Angel Mitov at South Block until 27 February.
