Artwork of the Week by Sian Mather

Our Artwork of the Week is this gorgeous painting of the inside of Kelvingrove Museum, by Sian Mather. Mather has a varied artistic practice in which she seems to effortlessly create beautiful artworks. Whether they be ceramic, painting, print or textile, Mather has a distinctly creative style which lends itself to each medium she puts her hands to.

These two paintings featured today may have been inspired by a project the artist has been involved with called Open Museums. A small group of artists working in Project Ability’s ReConnect studio became involved with Open Museums in 2018, and among other events and workshops this culminated in a wonderful exhibition and gallery talk; ‘Extraordinary Responses’ and Art Extraordinary. This has led onto another related project which you can read more about here: Heritage Lottery Project. Mather’s paintings match her ceramics in that they picture beautifully drawn compositions of people and places. The textures and layers of line work with the paint/glaze create a dense saturation of pattern and paintwork.

We hosted a solo showcase of Sian’s artwork with several ceramics pieces in 2018. Below is a small selection of the ceramic work on display in that exhibition.

The Project Ability studio is usually awash with inspirational artworks and projects going on, and that is something we’ve been missing a lot. Sian Mather is one of the many artists that inspire us in new and creative ways. We are ready to be back in the studios and surrounded by art and artists!

It will be a lovely day when we can both get back into the Project Ability studios and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. In the meanwhile though, thanks for these paintings Sian, we love them! You can see these two paintings of Kelvingrove Museum in our current online exhibition,

‘As Time Stood Still, Part Two’.
