We are delighted to introduce you to the wonderful Elisa Coffey in today’s Meet the Volunteers! Elisa has been a great addition to our Create workshops!
Are you a graduate or undergraduate artist? Can you tell us what course you are on, or a little about your art practice?
I am a recent Painting and Printmaking graduate from the Glasgow School of Art. My practice is mainly process-based. I enjoy experimenting with traditional painting and craft materials, making paintings that are often sculptural in form.
In what workshop did you volunteer?
I volunteered in the Saturday morning Create workshop.
Why did you apply to volunteer at Project Ability?
I admire the work of Project Ability and the platform it provides for artists of all abilities. I was keen to get involved. I also wanted to further develop a connection with the artistic community of Glasgow out with my studies. Volunteering at Project Ability provided a great opportunity to do so. I find being in the company of creativity informs that of my own. I guess that’s also a reason for why I applied; to immerse in an environment of conversation and making.
Did your experience live up to your expectations?
I expected it to be an enjoyable experience – which it definitely has been. Spending Saturday mornings at the workshop has been so rewarding. It’s been great to see the young artists’ developments from week to week, as they become more confident and experimental. The staff are so friendly and the materials and facilities available are fantastic.
What have you learned from your experience with us?
I’ve learned that accessibility to creativity and creative space is important. Project Ability really provides a space for the artists to endlessly create and explore, with whatever materials and processes they wish. I also learned that it was important to engage in conversation with the kids through making. Talking to the young artists helped inform a balance of support and artistic freedom. Their approach to making their artwork is intuitive and full of enjoyment, something you can’t help but be inspired by.
Do you have a favourite Project Ability artist or artwork that has stood out for you?
The artists have made beautiful work throughout the workshop – it’s hard to pick one. Guy’s most recent hand-printed tote bag is a favourite. He chose a lovely balance of blues and oranges that makes it a stand-out piece.
Would you recommend others to volunteer with us?
Yes! It really is a great opportunity to meet and work with artists in an inclusive and safe environment. It is a beneficial experience as an art practitioner, or even just as someone with a passion for creativity and expression.
Thank you Elisa! See how you can apply to become a volunteer.
